Many Road Authorities throughout the snow belt and northern regions of North America use Street Sand as a traction aid in maintaining safe winter driving conditions.  The coarse granular particles that characterize Street Sand are typically used in conjunction with varying amounts of Road Salt.  Once the winter season is over, the used sand remaining on the streets and boulevards in urban areas is collected by street sweepers.  This 'used' material is considered contaminated as it contains levels of salts, hydocarbons and other materials that make it unsuitable for re-use or other applications.   Disposal is generally the only alternative.  However, with today's ever increasing economic, environmental and limited natural resource pressures, Road Authorities need a tool to maximize the value of their investment in Street Sand.
